January will mark the 4th anniversary of Unpopular Front. I’ve been so amazed and feel so grateful that this little enterprise has turned out to be such a success, but as much as I enjoy doing it, it also requires a lot of maintenance. As you may know, this newsletter is my main source of income—writing books and magazine articles does not pay how it used to—and it is available to the public by and large for free. There is one weekly paid piece and even that is only partially paywalled! I want to keep it this way so my writing can be discovered by others and shared easily. But I need your help: if you are a regular reader and believe in what I do here, please consider opting for a paid subscription. It’s quite cheap when you think about it: at 5 dollars a month, it’s less than most menu items at Starbucks! And now it’s about to get even cheaper: I’m offering a promotion of 20% off annual subscriptions. Keep in mind, while I consider this all to be a terrific success, this is a small publication for the standards of Substack: I have a few thousand subscribers, but, say, certain former Vox writers who shall remain nameless, have tens of thousands. If you think the writing here is valuable, this is also an opportunity to vote with your dollar!
If you have someone in your life who you know is interested in politics, history, culture and society, Unpopular Front might also make an interesting holiday gift for them!
While I have you, another gift idea: my book When the Clock Broke: Con Men, Conspiracists, and How America Cracked Up in the Early 90s. I’m sorry to say it feels very relevant now! I’m not sorry to say that it has also made a few year-end lists, like Publishers Weekly's ten best books of 2024, Washington Post’s ten best books of 2024, and The New York Times 100 notable books of 2024. Check it out: it may help you or a loved one get your bearings in our strange times.
Okay, sorry to bother you, have a happy holiday season!
