from one perspective fascism can be perversely ecumenical--a union of selfish bastards, hateful pricks, and gross perverts looking past each others differences to recognize their shared humanity as irredeemable pieces of shit
I gather that one constant fascist claim was that it would resolve the class-conflict by making The Nation, in the Nazi variant Volk, in Falangism Faith, supervening.
Fascism was evidently pretty popular among Italian Jews; I don't know but I speculate that its promise to integrate the nation across class and region was part of the reason, and its initial anti-clerical character was important. (Did the Church still control the public schools in Italy back then?, I know that people died over the issue in Spain two decades prior.)
In Germany I gather there was the promise of going beyond the old aristocracy and ending what I gather was the original Kulturkampf, that between Protestant and Catholic…which might have heated-up after (e.g. & esp.) Bavaria was integrated into the Reich led by Lutheran Prussians. (Did it?)
I sort of want to share this with some friends, but it's scary. It's scary because it's real.
Sometimes when something pops up in the news about Republicans threatening to kill people, I think that my neighbor across the creek might stop shooting for one day, just to prove he's not really one of the people who are planning to kill people. I also think maybe, when there's a mass shooting, that he might stop for one day. But no. He never stops.
I think most Democrats think that the threat to kill people is just rhetoric. It is not. They are practicing every day for it. If they don't win, they are going to kill people. I am not sure whom they will target, though. It may not be like Jan 6 2020. It probably won't be. It may be something more like stochastic terror.
It’s real for sure. Like the two guys who came into my place of business and demanded the work not be done by ‘filthy migrants’ - all said to my POC employee whose parents were, ahem, migrants. Their large truck was festooned with a big flag and Trump image in the rear windshield. Something told me that the large tools box contained more than tools.
In my town, businesses have been threatened and even shot at because they were associated with a DRAG SHOW. Involving native-born men who were wearing wigs and make-up. This, too, is grounds for threats, intimidation, and bullets.
While I get where this is coming from, I don’t think one really has to go deeply into the weeds of mass psychology and psychosis to explain Trump, Vance, Robinson, et al, and their broad appeal. This is all just a form of popular theater. It’s entertainment. Trump has brought the WWE, the carnival freak show and the three ring circus to town — in fact to every town in America. In other words, “everywhere and all at once.” There is something for everyone to gawk at, cheer and boo at, laugh at and deride. And on and on. It’s all about the entertainment value and how many “viewers” they can capture, headlines they can generate, poor suckers’ money they can pocket, and daddy big bucks backers they can score.
Step right up and get yer tickets! You won’t believe your own eyes! You’ve never seen anything like this!
The phenomenon and the allure of big showy extravaganzas is riven to human history and “civilization,” whether in the form of traveling circuses, the WWE, gladiators in the Coliseum, monster truck shows, rodeos, football games, live pop concerts, massive fireworks displays, Papal mass blessings, lynchings, and so much more such theater directed at mass solidarity, mobilization, and/or catharsis. And a close relative of these are the constant flow of “You should — but you can’t — look away” sensationalism of live-streamed and video-replayed scenes of natural disasters, domestic mass shootings, warfare, terrorism, and, again, so, so much more.
These are all of a piece simply because they are all designed to stir the emotions and to capture the imaginations of masses of people, near and far. This is basic hearts and minds stuff. Or, as we mostly call it: Marketing. The weird thing is that, in all of these other forms, this seems normal. But for some reason, in politics, so many are SHOCKED! JUST SHOCKED!
Luckily for all of us, Kamala and Tim get this. Sometimes you just gotta put on a better show. And, in a contest, as with the WWE, etc., when facing the really bad guy, you have to show up with the antithesis of that — the really good guy. And then you duke it out. Of course, WWE matches are actually rigged, which is part of what Trump is pulling from when he claims he lost because the 2020 contest was rigged. People understand that most of these cathartic mass theater pieces are rigged. Why would politics be any different?
But a gain, thankfully, Kamala and Tim get this. They have brought the really good-guy tag team to face the really bad-guy team. And they have brought big-time, prime-time skills and charisma. We now have a fighting chance against the bad guys whose schtick has gotten stale and predictable. There’s a real opening here for new heroes/champions who change “the vibe” and win over much of the audience.
This political season has finally become a really good match. Step right up and get yer ballots!
Agree, it's not complicated psychologically. The problem is, ordinary people take it literally, even though Vance and Trump know they are lying (about the Haitians eating cats, etc). Then they act on it, violently. And there are so many guns.
It would not surprise me if my neighbor across the creek actually believes that Haitians are eating pets, just as he probably believed that Hillary ate babies. I have met people here who say they believe preposterous things like that. I can't explain why, other than that people are poorly educated and not good at critical thinking skills. Whether they really, really believe it or not is a mystery. Sometimes I think people convince themselves that an obvious lie is true, because they want to belong to the group that is telling the lie. In that case, the more preposterous the lie is, the more you prove your loyalty by believing it.
People who move and work among reasonably literate and reality-based thinkers may be unaware how absolutely dumb-ass and divorced from reality a lot of Americans are. But Trump and Vance are aware. As Trump said, "I love the uneducated!" They also know that when one of their followers does something violent, they can plausibly deny any responsibility for it. They didn't TELL people to threaten and attack Haitians who are legally here. They didn't TELL that guy to go to the pizza shop in DC with a gun.
Stupidity can turn lethal. It almost did, for Trump himself!
To extend your metaphor about a circus/spectacle: in America, it's as if everybody went to the circus armed with an AR-15, and then if they saw a clown beating up another clown, they all rushed into the ring and started shooting at clowns.
I do fear that Trump himself and his campaign staff have cognizance of evil. These are people who know of the forces they are tampering with (stochastic terrorism, politically condoned violent rhetoric and actions, etc.) and act upon them with intention.
Ironically, WWE fans are the second-most Democratic-leaning next to NBA fans (something like 60/40 D/R). It's more working-class, but among wrestling fans, Trump is deeply despised.
I can't shake the feeling that behind all the going-off-the-rails is the idea that noöne can stop them because they have most of the guns and the willingness [EDIT: throbbing eagerness] to use them.
I feel bad believing this, but I can't shake the feeling that the barbarians aren't invading but that we have bred-up our own contingent from amongst ourselves. Maybe they _needed_ the constraints of traditional, non-antinomian, religion to constrain them, maybe 'I do my thing and you do yours.' has the caveat implicit in the version of that poster with Hitler on it…
…or maybe barbarism sells, both itself (as in all those action movies that 'demonstrate' that one man with a conspiracy theory and a gun is morally superior to The Corrupt System) and a range of goods. (Wife and I are both appalled by a car commercial encouraging letting your 'inner child' drive.)
In a country where every dead-end wage-slave is told to identify with the multi-billionaires, because he or she could be one of them some day (spoiler alert: they won't), is it any surprise that a Black man can identify with genocidal racists?
And don't forget the element of misogyny: he may not be able to join the Klan or the SS and wantonly kill and torture Untermenschen, but he sure as hell can treat the womenfolk like shit!
Repeating myself, but I still doubt that anyone much away from Silicon Valley (and similar places) believes they'll be billionaires or even millionaires, but rather they believe in a moral system that tells them that it they _could_ have been if they were just good enough, so the corporate part of the System is basically just, and is the bedrock of whatever they _do_ have, and the only thing standing between the unjust bits of it, ('woke capitalism') and of course The Evil Gummint, taking what little they _do_ have—their house, their shitty job, their daughters—and giving it all to unworthy SubMen.
Dan Savage (sex and relationship columnist) pointed out that the kind of peephole places that Robinson went to were places that men went in search not so much of porn but blowjobs. Given the Robinson's admitted interest in trans-porn, Nick Fuentes's history with catboys, (and maybe even JD's drag play) the fascism seems to be powered by these men externalizing their horror of their own sexualities.
Quite possibly, and at times the modern G.O.P. seem rooted fundamentally in the Masculine Protest, both about sex-rôles and privileges and in the general 'I wonʼt let Widow Douglas and Miss Watson civilise _me_!', though I'll note that those two worthies thought 'civilised' meant that Huck should be _more_ racist….
But:
I feel the need to mention that Dan Savage, though often helpful and entertaining, is biassed, e.g. reading "Sex at Dawn" and claiming that it proved that monogamy were unnatural when the book is a mess sociobiological just-so stories written by one polyamorous ex-Catholic (I will hazard) working through residual guilt and swallowed whole by another such. …and lacking all academic respectability is not disposative, but it when noöne's built a peer-reviewed career on a thesis when the academic world actually _loves_ novel such iff they've got the goods….
Back, pre-Internet, I went to pornographic theatres maybe ten times and peepshows about as much, never looking for anything else, and propositioned only once. I'm sure there were always men there looking for company, but I would guess them to be a minority, just as (without any intended moral judgement of either case, though I'm human) most people in bars aren't alcoholic but there are always alcoholic people there.
(Funniest pornographic experience: walking Yonge Street in 2001, and seeing that it could have been Times Square in 1981, much like the G.T.A. transit system then looked, smelt, and sounded like the subway c.1975.)
If it weren't so threatening, it would be pretty fascinating that as these very psychically damaged men have emerged as the top leadership of the right (Trump, Vance, Musk, Thiel, Alito, Thomas, Bannon), it has welcomed the truly and demonstrably psychotic people like Mark Robinson, the hardcore white nationalists, self-invented militias, and the neo-Nazis to come out as loud and proud. The net effect is to invite every angry and unbalanced man out there to become the heroic self he believes himself to be through violence––never mind if it means some of them will see DJT himself as a target of assassination.
It really does feel as if the paleo-conservatism of Buchanan and Limbaugh has been transposed from ideology into psychosis.
I dunno, may it's not the point of the post but overlooked (or maybe I missed it) is thatRobinson is (IMO of course) electable. In the Party of Trump--and the entire GOP is, as a practical matter, the Party of Trump--unfit candidates like Robinson are 100% electable. Should add that the complicity of voters in this state of affairs is huge.
I can't believe that a Jewish Democrat can actually defeat a fine Xian RWNJ like Robinson; time will tell. I should add that whatever the electoral liability of being a Jewish candidate in a red state was, now that Trump is adding as a reason for his own possible loss a result of "the Jews", well, I don't that's going to help defeat Robinson.
Anyway, I've seen this whole X-can't-be-elected belief proven wrong way too many times to believe Robinson's loss is assured.
John's book "When the Clock Broke" has a chapter on David Duke's elections in Louisiana and the bipartisan mobilization it took for Edwin Edwards to defeat him for governor. Duke had a similar character to Robinson - not only a Nazi but an unrestrained horndog.
The difference nowadays is that there is less bipartisan mobilization against these kooks. We will see what happens with Robinson.
I'm not sure what bipartisanship is available to block a member of the Party of Trump.
The Republican voters have consistently gone for insane, unfit POS since choosing Trump in the 2016 primaries.
Even with electoral losses since Dobbs and 2020, they seem to still be committed to the POS.
As for general elections, the only place some bipartisan crossing an electoral divide is needed is obviously where Dems choose not to even run candidates.
I was not familiar with him and checked his Wikipedia. Man, what a piece of sh*t. It's rare to find so many despicable personality traits contained in one man. Serial killer material
The galvanizing exchange between political power to sexual power through the medium of transgressive sex (which, I think it’s reasonable to infer that Robinson’s sexual interests here hinge on their transgression against his purported morals if they may also reveal a genuine preference) is a staggeringly on-the-nose example of fascist aesthetics. His obvious lack of artistic zeal is the distinctly American nature of these aesthetic sensibilities.
Slightly off-topic, but Trump's 'The Juwes are the men that will not be blamed for nothing' (an old graffito quite possibly emitted by another rich man pretending to be uneducated) is _intensely_ Jewish-Conspiratorial.
Why would you warn a room full of prominent Jews who have already demonstrated you their support that the other Jews 'better vote for me or else' unless you think they can then go to Jew Central and order the rest of us to go do it?
Much the same with the 1619 Project. How can you look at the US today and think that the most important issue in its foundation was “no taxation without represention
What used to be fatal character flaws, thus making one unelectable are now pushed as assets...virtues! Is this phenomenon here to stay or is it part of this Trumpian phase on the right --a storm which will soon abate? I'm done with being surprised at what they say or past scandalous behavior. It clearly doesn't bother GOP base voters.
Mr. Robinson--think Dustin Hoffman's voice in The Graduate--makes Don King (Only in America), who stomped one man to death who owed him $60 and killed another by shooting him in the back, look cute and cuddly.
Standards are declining! Per Daniel Patrick Moynihan, this is defining deviancy down.

Automotive industry.
I think people who don't live around a lot of Republicans don't understand what it is really like.

Black Nazi Pornographers? That rapper Ye already hosted a porn website's award show back in 2018, Mark Robinson has a lot of catching up to do.

"Weird" and "not normal" are apt descriptions of Republicans. They are also dangerous and psychopaths.
I’m copying and sharing some of this. It couldn’t be clearer who they are and what they believe. Thanks, John.
