Lovely post John

Trump is truly a shit-stain on the American flag. Everything he does is desecration, pollution, vileness and filth.

We will have to scrub hard to get him out, and even after the flag comes clean again, I worry that it will be sullied in our memories.

I think it is also worth noting as fitting within your construct, the Knicks are a /team/ and won in a team sport representing a city. What we’re witnessing in DC is a spectacle of individuals, fighting only for themselves and their personal glory.

You write beautifully about New York. It brings something out in you.

Fine essay, John. What is called a "flagrant foul" in basketball will be the norm this afternoon in the spectacle of sadism on the desecrated grounds of the White House. This Celtics fan salutes the Knicks.

Congrats from the UK. Watched this morning on a dodgy Youtube channel; great to see Brunson, Kat, Josh & all the lads put it away. Also great to see 5k away fans spread out in the arena, and it not degenerate into a riot (as it would in Europe!). The away following initially took a battering for stealing home tickets, but over time it’s been heartening to see the Knicks diaspora, and fans priced out of MSG, making their presence felt.

Great piece. I also take great pleasure in the fact that while Trump considers himself the quintessential New Yorker and is still obsessed with the New York social scene, Knicks fans pretty much universally loath him and everything he stands for. Even though he’s been elected president twice, he’s still a fundamentally rejected man.

I was heartened to wake to a Knicks victory and the show of vital strength of the City against the odds.

Thanks for the article. I have been amazed how the city has come together as one in their joy and excitement for the Knicks. The scenes from the watch parties have been inspiring at a time when our country is in such darkness.

Loved this, but you almost gave me a heart attack. Bastille Day also happens to be my wife’s birthday. Did I miss it?

Uh, John, Bastille Day is JULY 14, Trump's cage match is today, JUNE 14, Flag Day.

Some of us are just eager to get those tumbrels a-rolling.

Yes, thanks. And I honestly believe Trump could well have jinxed game 3. I don’t mean something mystical. The multiple ways he soured the day, the scene, and the game itself surely affected the players. So for me their win in 5 is also a triumph over the Prince of Darkness.

Go Knicks!

Without taking anything away from the historic win of the Knicks, football (soccer) is the one true ‘world game’ that truly crosses the boundaries of class, race and religion. The miserable DC event just proves that whilst NYC still does an entertaining version of itself, America writ large has become the most unserious country in the world. Its collapse would also be funny if the consequences for the rest of the world weren’t so significant.
