I joined the DSA Chicago Chapter this morning in response to Rubio's bizzarre and pretty scary press conference. I'd always been reluctant as my impression of the DSA from members I know is that it subscribes to the 'the personal is political', decadent identitarianism that dominates so much of the left today. But if they're going to try to ban it, I'm sure I won't be the only social democrat who joins in solidarity.
Max Sawicky sharply distinguishes between the national DSA (which according to him is as you described), and the local chapters of the DSA, many of which are sensible in the Mamdani-Sanders-AOC mode.
my reaction to nearly everything these numbnuts in the administration say is a quick wanking gesture. they’re incapable of organizing a fair much less mass repression.
And perhaps some Iranian schoolchildren, if they were still alive. But I am told this ill-planned war will fall apart eventually, so I have no need to get too worked up (or something).
My pet theory is that Marco Rubio has a tacit deal with Trump: Rubio will go along with all Trump's crap as long as Cuba is "regime-changed" and Rubio gets to go down in history as its liberator from communism.
I think Lindsay Graham was working on the same playbook, just with respect to Iran. He and McCain always loved that Beach Boys classic "Bomb, bomb, bomb..., bomb, bomb Iran."
It is all as farcical as Putin's fantasy of being the second coming of Peter the Great.
It doesn't sound to me like Rubio & Co. are attacking Cuba. It looks more like they are trying to inflate the significance of our home-grown America Worsters: the "anti-imperialist" tankies who imbibe their vulgar Rousseauvian shtick filtered through Che Guevara's beret. Those folk are quite real, quite annoying, and quite insignificant. If I were a MAGA propagandist, I'd try to inflate them too. But I don't think that anybody is buying.
Sam Francis was also an unapologetic neoconfederate and believed all the Confederate mythology he’d been raised with. He was a White Citizens Council type of white supremacist. He died suddenly when he was in his sixties after surgery. The person who still shares his views is Pat Buchanan.
Nightmarish but laughable remarks from Miller and Rubio. Cubans leaving Cuba aren’t communist infiltration but victims. Muslims from the Middle East though? That’s importing terrorism!
“They’re all just jealous of our good way of life”, too just is bizarre.
Farcical? Dumb? Maybe, but MAGA will try to put this over anyway. Besides, the more they can get critics to roll their eyes, the more space they have to do almost whatever they want.
Yet again, poor little USA evidently finds itself existentially threatened by impoverished non-nuclear statelets with the GDP of Omaha, and domestically by political groups that have fewer members than the national bowling association. Batten the hatches, or something. Who knows what a "completely pretextual...appeal to civil liberties" is, but I guess it's kind of like imminent invasion and carpet-bombing of civilians peacefully just eating their shreddies.
Marco Rubio is a opportunist tool who uses the unimaginable suffering caused by Marxist-Leninist regimes to justify right-wing authoritarianism. The DSA has a legitimate problem with tankies and the centralized politics they bring — several founding members have resigned stating that the Red Star Caucus goes against the democratic principles the organization was founded on — but that's no excuse for an unconstitutional McCarthyist fearmongering. I'm also pretty damn sure that Rubio isn't just going to go after Marxist-Leninists; This is clearly a ploy to dehumanize anyone who doesn't support Christian Nationalism and Laissez-faire Capitalism. Ironically, I think Laissez-faire Capitalism and Communism suffer because both lead to economic centralization (the former via monopolies and the latter from abolishing private property and nationalizing all assets). https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/07/dsa-communist-socialist-democrats/687756/
Man, what a wild episode from history, how have I never heard anything about this?!
I was even on de Borchgrave's (I'm not checking my spelling, sue me) Wikipedia not all that long ago and didn't pick up anything to suggest this insane moment.

First they came for the Democratic Socialists, but I was not a Democratic Socialist.
So I joined up!

The Prairieland defendants might want to disagree.

"Where's my Roy Cohn!"

Or Netanyahu, being the the smiter of Amalek.

Yes, I wrote a book largely about him
Is it the last book you published, or is it another book?
The last book I published is my only book.
Ok, I asked because it’s on my long book list.
I believe the standard is "...third time as miniseries."

There will be enough of them that view this as a fresh and revealing take.

I should have added that Marx's quote about tragedy and farce is referencing Louis Bonaparte play-acting as his uncle Napoleon I.
Yes, I know....
Yes, I know you know - I just meant to say it fits with the pattern of playacting the past from my first comment.
